What is a mind map?

A mind map is a graphical thinking technique in which a topic stands in the centre and thoughts grow outwards from there like the branches of a tree. It was developed in the 1970s by Tony Buzan – based on the way our brain actually works: not in lines and lists, but in connections and associations.

Because keywords, colours and structure come together, a mind map addresses several channels of perception at the same time. This promotes the understanding of complex relationships, sparks new ideas and makes what has been worked out easier to remember. Whether clarifying goals, analysing problems, planning projects or generating ideas – in coaching, a mind map helps to make the “knots in your head” visible, to bring order to chaotic thoughts and, together with clients, to recognise structures that remain hidden in continuous text.
